Job Hunting

The ever-awesome Screw You! presents yet another Elance rant.
In the meantime, here's a little Elance embassadoring for you: If you want to be paid fairly for your talents and don't want to be part of a model that hugely favors buyers over service providers (and if you don't want to be treated like dirt after raking in thousands of dollars for a company), steer clear of Elance.

I'm sure that comment will lure out the paid ambassadors, so bring it on.
Comments like this and the incredibly low pay rates have made me steer clear of Elance. Has anyone had a positive experience there? I also don't like the bidding aspect, it just rubs me the wrong way to see writers competing to make less and less. How can we expect to make decent money when we're willing to undercut each other from low down to ludicrous? Not to mention working for free...

I'm a big fan of Craig's List for one-off writing gigs (or editing, or design, or whatever skill you've got). Sure, there are the incredibly low-paying gigs and requests for free work, but I've connected with some of my best clients through old Craig's List. What do you think? How do you look for side projects?

Hi, this is Nicole from Rent a Coder. Rentacoder provides access to programming, writing, illustration, even data entry jobs. (You can get a sense of the broad scope of work available here: http://www.rentacoder.com/RentACoder/SoftwareCoders/BrowseWork.asp).

I want to especially caution against looking for jobs on sites like Craigslist. Our site offers live support via email or chat or phone seven days-a-week. And it has a requirements wizard and a project posting wizard to help you build a project that's easy for workers to understand. Craigslist certainly doesn't offer this type of support because it was never designed to. Craigslist is a classified ads site where we're an international 3rd party online international marketplace for contracted employment. We're the only service that offers support on this level.

If you have any questions, please let me know. You can also call in to talk to a facilitator 7 days a week, or email us (see http://www.rentacoder.com/RentACoder/misc/Feedback.asp).
